outside readings: Bible
I was looking over notes and wanted to see how there was an actual comparison between religion and art, and the Bible. One main concept I found was image. When I thought of image the first thing that came to mind was how God made an image of himself, Christ. Then I thought deeper about it. Images are created through stories. The spreading of Christianity used stories to pass on the name of God, and then the image of God, Christ, to find followers. An example from the Bible is the Garden and the forbidden fruit. I must have heard this a million times growing up, but it was always through word, stories, and images.
When I think about my own personal experience with the Bible, I think of church and communion. When I was younger my parents would not let me be a part of communion until I truly understood the meaning behind it. The symbolization of the bread and the wine was something I didn't quite understand at a younger age, I just wanted the grape juice. As I grew older and learned more about religion, I was finally able to take part in communion. I feel like the first time I had communion it was a type of religious experience for myself personally. I was no longer focused on the reality, grape juice and bread, but on the meaning and representation. I was immediately reminded of how Jesus broke bread and felt like I was a part of it.
