Lindsay Conrad - Annabel Lee

The poem Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe presents an interesting view in terms of love not being able to be destroyed by the issue of death or envy or jealousy. Poe puts forth an argument that would give love a divine nature as it would not be able to be destroyed no matter the demons. Love being something of the divine could take away from the Holy because it is a desire that is on something other than the diety to be served. So, in one sense van der Leeuw would be appalled by the argument that Poe seems to make in his poem, and way that the idea is something profane and is not worthy to be called holy. On the other hand I think that van der Leeuw would see love as an action that would come in its best and most pure form from the Holy. The dieties that people serve are generally the creators of the world, saviours of people, or divine help in times of distress. I would think that the actions done by the divine because of an intense feeling of love or care for the people. So, maybe love is a divine feeling?
