Outside Reading by Lama Govinda
"Religion without art is a dead system of dogmas which have no effect on life."
When reading this work by Lama Govinda, a believer in Tibetan Buddhism, I started thinking about religion and art in a different way. I have always thought of art needing religion. There is obviously religious art, but is there artistic religion? The idea of religion needing art is interesting. Govinda is saying that without art, religion has no effect on life. We have to define the characteristics of art in order to understand this. Art is creation, movement, beauty, expression, communication, imagination, and inspiration among other things. Religion has to be all these things in order to change people. Religion has all of these aspects. Religion and art are intertwined. They need each other. They are very similar and use each other to express and communicate.
