Symbol and Image in Celtic Art by Miranda Green
Celtic cult imagery is representative of religion in England that was started before Roman times. There are many differences in cult expressions; family symbols, where your from, etc. Celtic symbols are representative of religion, family and heritage. Water, sun and trees are also discussed in her book and goes into their symbolism of what they all mean. Celtic symbols hold both power and meaning. Today celtic symbols are most commonly seen in the form of tattoos on bodies of other people. The word "celtic" refers to people who lived in Britain and Western Europe from 500 BC to 400 AD. Most celts lived in small villages that were led by warrior chiefs. The signs and symbols are hard to trace back to their actual meanings today, but there are still possiblities. Nature, animals and family membership are all possibilities that can be incorporated into the celtic symbols. Balance, unity, faith and hope are popular symbols used in celtic imagery. Personal experience and preference all come down to the final symbol, but there are many attributes that go into a making a celtic symbol. The original celtic symbol used 3 circle like triangles that was called the triquetra; now circles and other cornered shapes have been added to many celtic symbols and tattoos for various reasons so the meaning are endless.
