12/4/09- painting

I absolutely love this painting. It is in the Chrysler Musuem of Art in Norfolk, VA. It was painted with oils by John George Brown in 1879. The details are very realistic, and the colors are beautiful. I especially like the subject. It is very romantic, showing a woman sitting on a beach waiting for her lover, presumably.
I think that whenever a piece of art captures emotion it is religious, because it is fundamentally describing a part of the universal human experience. This painting is therefore religious; it shows several emotions, among them longing, love, loneliness, and hope.
Longing is portrayed in the way the woman shown has written her lover's name in the sand. Love is shown in the way she waits for him patiently, and on the beach at that so she can see his ship come over the horizon. Loneliness can be seen in the fact that the beach is empty- it seems that others have come and gone (hence the footprints), but she is still there. Finally hope is shown in the very fact that she is there to see him come home- she knows he will arrive eventually.
