12/4/09- cosmetics as art

I have always thought that the purpose of women's makeup (at least in the West) was to accentuate natural beauty. The action of altering one's looks beyond recognition is only for the camera and the stage. When a woman applies cosmetics, she is engaging in religious art. Why? Because without makeup she is already, I believe, a creation of God. This in itself is religious, but the changing that creation must obviously be religious as well. Some beliefs forbid women from wearing makeup for this very reason. But I think that if someone is only accentuating her natural beauty, keeping in mind that she is in fact already beautiful, using makeup is not wrong. After all, the only thing humans can do art-wise is to imitate their Creator who has already imagined and brought into being anything we will ever think beautiful.
