Van der Leeuw says, "The word which comes from God returns to him also in the form of praise. It directs itself also to human understanding."
This quote explains why prayer is so amazing. When a person prays a prayer that is not rote, but rather is a true expression of that person's immediate heart situation, he or she has an enriching experience. Prayer is a simple way to connect to God. One need only direct attention to him and express what is on one's heart. This expression comes in the form of words, and allows the person praying to give thanks or ask for help, state concerns or praise God. In this way, prayer gives people the opportunity to use word to praise God.
