12/4/09- Dance
Van der Leeuw says of dance, "Man dances because he is freed, mobilized by a moving power."
I really like this quote, because it is true in my own life. Whenever I am dancing, I feel relieved and empowered. Sometimes I enjoy choreographing dance. Van der Leeuw would likely view this as a profaning of the art form, because it apparently undermines the purpose of moving freely, but I disagree. I think that creating a dance and then memorizing and practicing the steps is still a sacred act. It allows me to use my mind, which I believe God gave me to use along with my body, to make my own unique dance. Dances are also often accompanied by music, and the combination of the two art forms produces a doubly religious effect for me. I am able to depart in some way from a hectic and often profaned life and withdraw into sacred action.
