Lindsay Conrad - Sleep as Religious Art
As I am up very early after a very late night, I begin to wonder about the art of sleeping. Sleeping is different that resting, which I think is more of an are. To rest is to let oneself fully take in the ease that one needs to feel rejuvenated. Rest is a peaceful vision and can look like a person praying or a child sleeping, or an old man with his eyes shut and his head laid back against an old rocking chair. The visual image is one that connects with the divine because the Bible says "find your rest in Me" so the mental image of rest is one that can connect easily and truly to the divine in the firm of finding shelter with your God.I think van der Leeuw would put it as an image or maybe even a drama because rest can me a movement with God but sleep can be a countermovement going away from God. The image is one that people may see in the midst of a busy day and will find rest in knowing the peace with God that is seen in the image.
