Outside reading: 1 Samuel 16
In this passage of the Old Testament art is shown to be powerful. Saul was king at the time and he was being tormented by an evil spirit send by God. Saul's servants got David to play the harp in order to drive out the evil spirit. Just before this Samuel had anointed David and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. "Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better and the evil spirit would leave him" (1 Samuel 16:23). This music seemed to be very powerful for various reason. Firstly, the Spirit of God was on David. God sent the evil spirit so that David could get rid of it. What makes the music special? The harp is a very beautiful and calming instrument. That music had power in it. It was divine, altering the unseen spirits. It was requested by God. God used art forms to do His will. How beautiful it must have sounded.
