David-Amy Jackson

"Without any doubt this figure has put in the shade every other statue, ancient or modern, Greed or Roman...To be sure, anyone who has seen Michelangelo's David has no need to see anything else by and other sculptor, living or dead." -Giorgio Vasari

I came across this quote as I was writing my paper on David. Giorgio Vasari was a fellow artist and close friend of Michelangelo. He makes a very bold statement in saying this. He is saying that is better than any statue ever made and any statue that hasn't been made yet. It is an absolute claim. Don't get me wrong, I think the David is a beautiful statue, but I don't think it is good enough to never need to see another one, ever. Art is an expression of feeling. Even if a work of art isn't as aesthetically beautiful as the David, the feeling behind the art made can communicate something that Michelangelo's statue cannot.
